A&S Activity: All-Day Open Scriptorium

The scriptorium is a great place for all experience levels. Bring the projects you're already working on, bring stuff you need help with, or just drop by to learn how to get started in the scribal arts! We have loaner supplies and folks who can walk you through the basics of calligraphy and illumination.

10-11 a.m.
Class: Introduction to Rapier
Instructor: Lord Knut Bjornsson

Learn the history, rules, and armor requirements for SCA rapier combat and how to acquire or make the equipment you'll need to take the field.

10-11 a.m.
Class: The Role of the Bard in the Early Middle Ages
Instructor: Thegn Dyfn y Pencerdd

Bards, Scops, Skalds... these were far more than singers and poets. We will discuss what they did and how to integrate the old bardic ways into the Current Middle Ages.

11 a.m. – Noon
Class: Chain Stitch Embroidery
Instructor: Genevieve of Drakenmere

Brief discussion of Viking/Celtic symbols and their meanings followed by instruction on how to chain-stitch the symbols on a linen napkin that can be used for feast gear. $5 supply fee includes wooden hoop, needle, floss, scissors and linen napkin. Fee waved for newcomers attending their first event. Limit 12 students.

11 a.m. – Noon
Class: Overcoming Your Creative Blocks
Instructor: Lady Rohais de Ravenscroft

You think of something you'd like to do, or make, or learn... and just as quickly you think of a reason you shouldn't do it. How often do you stand in your own way, and convince yourself that you'll try again sometime later, once you are “good at it”? Let's talk about what it takes to make that leap of confidence, and step outside your comfort zone. Watch out! Your creative blocks are about to come tumbling down!

An introduction to period tunic construction with rectangles and triangles.

Class: Introduction to Live Weapons
Instructor: Lady Katarzyna of Saulia

Introduction to the world of live weapons. Discussion of the rules, etiquette, and equipment used on the live weapons ranges. Sadly, there will be no range on site, but demonstration equipment will be available to explain how inspections occur and what is looked for. Class is open to all interested in live weapons, not just those who are interested in becoming a marshal. Children under 12 are welcome, but must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

2-3 p.m.
Class: Cooking Up a Little Magic
Instructor: Lord Gunnarr Inn Hviti

A discussion of how performance magic effects are categorized and presented, with examples performed by Gunnarr. A lecture and magic show combined.

2-3 p.m.
Class: Introduction to Heavy Fighting
Instructor: Earl Wulfstan Thorhallsson

A look at the basics of heavy fighting. Rules of combat, how to start/improve your rig, and what you need to know to get started.

3-4 p.m.
Class: Herbal Fighter Care
Instructor: Mistress Mara Palmer

An intro to making bruise balms, medieval Bengay, and electrolyte-replenishers to keep your fighters happy and healthy. We will make a few in class that you get to take home! No class fee, though donations for material costs are appreciated.

3-4 p.m.
Class: Introduction to Illumination
Instructor: Lady Satara al-Katiba

Learn materials, tools, resources, and techniques to the art of painting scrolls. Hands-on!
